About
There are about 3,500 commonly used Chinese characters. Recognizing 500 to 800 of these is enough for simple daily conversations and basic reading. Mastering 1,500 to 2,000 characters allows you to read general articles, books, and news, and engage in more complex conversations. Knowing 3,000 to 4,000 characters means you can easily read newspapers, literature, and most Chinese materials.
It’s clear that recognizing a certain number of characters is key to mastering Chinese. There are many ways to learn, but learning character by character, especially in frequency order, is easy, effective and efficient for beginners. As shown in fig.1, by learning just 200 characters, you can cover 55% of Chinese texts; 500 characters cover 75%, and with 1,000 characters, you can read nearly 90% of all Chinese content. If you learn 5 characters a day, in 200 days, you’ll master 1,000 characters—less than a year! Learning 10 characters a day cuts that to just 100 days. Doesn't mastering Chinese seem achievable and exciting?
